RENEWAL IN A CHANGING ORGANISATION

Taking a stubborn step towards a connected workplace

Following a fusion between Stolwijk and Kelderman, the desire came about to redesign their office in Wijchen, which OCS+ had already had the opportunity to design in 2010. The new situation called for more space, better facilities and a working environment that grows with the organisation. A place that is not only functional and representative, but also attractive to new talent. OCS+ was again chosen as a partner, thanks to our co-creative approach and ability to look for new opportunities in every project. With minimal structural interventions, creative reuse and contemporary choices, we realised an environment that puts meeting, flexibility and job satisfaction centre stage. Even in a sector where closed offices had long been the norm.

"We were a bit stubborn
and those open-plan workplaces are now most popular."
Laura (Designer OCS+) about the transformation of Stolwijk Kelderman

Our approach

The addition of a full extra floor gave the opportunity to reconsider the overall office concept. Not only upstairs, but also on the ground and first floors, the layout, routing and appearance were analyzed. OCS+ provided a design in which all floors are visually and functionally connected. An important step was the introduction of open workplaces. Where previously mainly closed offices were the norm, we now consciously (and a bit boldly) made room for open zones and meeting places. We invited people to literally see each other more. These zones are now the office's most popular spots. We also created a multifunctional space that can be used flexibly, enabling collaboration with schools or external partners, for example.
With every project, we explore how things can be done differently, smarter and more sustainably. From the first sketch, we thought about how existing structures could be reused. Furniture was kept or refurbished where possible (even after 15 years) and materials were carefully chosen for their lifespan and flexibility. By cleverly looking at what was already there, the impact on the building remained limited - without compromising on quality.
For the realisation, we worked closely with the external project manager and building owner. With short lines of communication and direct communication, OCS+ took care of the finishing and furnishing, including custom-made furniture, floor finishing, pantries and planting.

The question behind the question

During the pitch phase, OCS+ managed to distinguish itself by zooming in deeply on the question behind the question. Instead of an elaborate final picture, the focus was on the design process: listening, questioning, and designing again. Despite the fact that Stolwijk Kelderman was used to closed offices, in the empathise phase we deliberately chose to introduce open workplaces. Well-founded, but also daring. Those open spaces are now the most popular areas in the office.
